Specialist children’s services
NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB commissions various Children’s Therapies including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Special School Nurses, Community Paediatrics, Clinical Psychology, Children’s Community Nurses and Learning Disability Nurses. The providers differ between the localities across North Yorkshire:
The provider for specialist children’s services for Hambleton and Richmondshire is Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. Specialist children’s services are for children and young people aged from 0-19 with physical, communication, learning and development difficulties or disabilities which affect health and wellbeing.
Services include Community Paediatrician, Clinical Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Special School Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. For more details on the service, referral criteria and referral form please visit the Harrogate Trust website.
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton provides Children’s Community Nursing at the Children’s Hub. The service provides services to children aged 0-19 with life limiting/complex, chronic and short-term health needs who require clinical nursing interventions within various community settings. Referrals can be made to the service by health professionals, and colleagues from other services, such as education and social services. South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton also provides the Paediatric Epilepsy Nursing service. This is for children and young people with Epilepsy who attend The Friarage Hospital. The service offers a telephone advice line which is available to families of patients living within the Friarage catchment area on 01642 854489. For more information please see HERE.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust
The provider for the Harrogate locality is Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. The Specialist Children’s Services are for children and young people aged 0-19 with physical, communication, learning and development difficulties or disabilities which affect health and wellbeing. Services include Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Special School Nursing. Referrals can be made to the service by health professionals, and colleagues from other services, such as education and social services. Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust also provides the Specialist Community Nursing Team in the Harrogate locality. The service provides care for children aged 0-19 with life limiting conditions receiving education in special school settings or with severe learning disabilities. The service includes Community Learning Disability Nurses, Children’s Community Nursing and Special School Nurses. Referrals to the Children and Young People’s Specialist Community Nursing Team can be made by parents, guardians and health professionals. York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The provider for Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale is York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at Scarborough Hospital. The Trust provides a local, community service for children and young people aged 0-18 who have physical, occupational and speech and language difficulties in Scarborough and the surrounding areas.

The Children’s Community Nursing Team provides short- and long-term nursing input and support to children aged 0-19 (16-19 if in full time education). Independently managed teams are based at Scarborough Hospital. Children can be referred directly to the team from Paediatricians and the wider child health medical team, Allied Health Professionals, Children’s Community Teams, School Nurses and other health professionals. The Sleep Charity
The Commissioned Service within North Yorkshire is provided by The Sleep Charity. It uses behavioural therapy, sleep clinics and workshops – rather than medication – to improve a child’s sleep health.

Referral information can be found on the flyer above. Once referred, a child and their family will be triaged to the most appropriate level of support, based on need, ranging from workshops and webinars, to one-on-one support with a specialist sleep practitioner.
