Two St Mary’s College students have won a special award at the Yorkshire and Humber Nuffield Research Placement Awards for their research work whilst on placement at the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB).
The ICB’s Best Place to Work team hosted two students over the summer to work as part of the Nuffield Research Placements (NRP).
The students worked on a social science project to identify barriers to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds accessing virtual work experience — the project included producing a report and presenting their findings to the team.
The NRP programme provides engaging, hands-on research projects where students in year 12 can make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation through a well-supervised but independent research collaboration relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths.
When asked about his placement, student, Jeevan Xavier said: “The placement has been insightful and helped me realise that I am interested in a career in medicine and research”.
Tina Jenkinson, Careers and Employability Manager at Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, said: “The NRP programme has helped us to engage with, inspire and inform young people about working life in health and care. Opportunities like this enable us to inspire and grow our future workforce”.
