Volunteers Week 2025

Celebrating Volunteers’ Week across Humber and North Yorkshire

From 2 to 8 June 2025, Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership’s VCSE Collaborative will join thousands of health organisations and charitable organisations in recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.

Running every year for over 20 years, the week provides a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion and skills. The campaign also highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK.

An estimated 3 million people volunteer in health and social care across both statutory and voluntary sector services in England (Kings Fund). Volunteers add significant value to service delivery and play a crucial role in improving experience of care, strengthening relationships between communities and services, and helping to reduce inequalities. Volunteering also plays an important role in helping people build skills and confidence and explore a potential future career in health and care.

Volunteering for Health programme

In 2024, Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership was successful in bidding for half a million pounds of Volunteering for Health funding. Our aim is to scale up 16+ youth volunteering across our health and care system by sharing practice, reducing barriers and improving pathways and investment.

Our vision is to release the untapped potential of youth volunteers (16+) to play a more central, transformative role in enhancing service delivery and improving patient and staff experience, and to boost routes into the health and care workforce.
Why we’re focusing on youth volunteering… because 16+ is a key age for thinking about your future career. Volunteering experience can inspire a young person and help them identify the right course, apprenticeship or job

Volunteering also builds skills and confidence, giving them the chance to find out – and show to others – what they’re capable of. If we want a representative workforce, we need to be giving these opportunities to young people.

One example of the incredible work taking place in Humber and North Yorkshire is the Humber Health Champions Youth Volunteering Programme.

The Humber Health Champions Youth Volunteering Programme has helped launch the careers of over 2,700 young people since its inception 10 years ago. It gives young people aged between 16 and 25 the opportunity to gain experience in different health roles in clinical settings through volunteering. This gives them insights and experience they can’t get in a classroom, builds their confidence and skills, and helps them make decisions about the next steps in their career. Importantly, it helps inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.
