Tobacco Dependency Treatment Programme

Smoking tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death, disability, illness, and social inequality and is attributed to approximately 20% of all deaths annually in the UK.

There is no greater intervention we can provide than to support people to stop smoking and protect future generations from ever starting.

The Humber and North Yorkshire Centre for Excellence in Tobacco Control is a pioneering initiative committed to transforming the future of our region by tackling one of the most pressing public health challenges—tobacco harm. Funded by the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, our mission is clear: to end the harm caused by tobacco.

We will do this by:

  1. protecting our young people from the dangers of smoking
  2. supporting our communities in leading healthier, smoke-free lives.

We are more than just a programme; we are a movement. At the Centre for Excellence, we bring together a dynamic coalition of partners from across the Humber and North Yorkshire region. By fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and amplifying impactful initiatives, we are leading the charge in the fight against tobacco.

Our approach is cutting-edge and comprehensive. We understand that ending smoking requires more than just treatment; it demands a united front that leverages the expertise, resources, and commitment of every partner involved. Through coordinated efforts, we aim to create a future where tobacco no longer poses a threat to the health and well-being of our communities.

Humber and North Yorkshire Centre for Excellence in Tobacco Control is a core member of the Smokefree Action Coalition, calling for action at national level on smokefree legislation, standardised plain packaging and raising the age of sale on tobacco by a year every year.

What support is available in Humber and North Yorkshire?

Across the whole region, free stop smoking support is available. For details of local services please click here: Find Your Local Stop Smoking Service (LSSS) – Better Health – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Stop smoking services offer one to one behavioural support sessions – either in person, over the internet or on the phone, where the advisor works with the person to identify triggers for smoking and how to adapt behaviours to create a smokefree life. They also provide prescriptions for nicotine replacement therapy items such as patches, inhalators or a vape. Anyone can refer themselves by getting in touch, as many times as they need help.

With a dedicated stop smoking service, people are three times more likely to quit for good than trying alone.

Hospital Tobacco Dependency Treatment Services

In addition to the local stop smoking services, all hospitals across the region offer dedicated Tobacco Dependency Treatment through the ‘Swap and Stop’ team to any patient admitted to hospital, maternity service users and their partners, and people resident in mental health settings who smoke.

Teams are highly trained to support people to stay smokefree at a critical time, which will positively impact their recovery and overall health.

The teams work hand in hand with hospital staff and locally commissioned services to ensure that wrap around support is available once someone is discharged from hospital.
